Our History
JV Forrestal Elementary School has deep roots in the Beacon community and a history that reflects the city’s long-standing commitment to public education. The school traces its origins to the former Spring Street School, which served generations of Beacon children and played an important role in the city’s educational landscape. When JV Forrestal was established, it carried forward the legacy of Spring Street, honoring the past while evolving to meet the needs of future learners.
One enduring symbol of this history is the school bell, which connects today’s students to those who came before them. Originally from the former Spring Street School, the bell was installed at JV Forrestal when the school opened in 1953 and has since become a powerful symbol of tradition and continuity within the Beacon community.
Ringing the bell is a cherished milestone at JV Forrestal. Each year, graduating 5th graders ring the bell at the conclusion of their Moving Up ceremony, and retiring staff members are honored with the opportunity to ring the bell as they celebrate this important chapter in their careers. The bell’s story continues to be preserved and in 2023 our 5th grade students in Ms. Fisher’s class created a short film exploring its significance. This project was supported by the Foundation for Beacon Schools and was featured in the BCSD Student Film Festival, these films highlight the bell’s lasting role in our school community - check it out here: History of the Bell
JV Forrestal Elementary School is named in honor of James Vincent Forrestal, a Beacon native and distinguished public servant. Forrestal was the first United States Secretary of Defense and played a significant role in shaping national defense policy during the mid-20th century. Before his government service, he built a successful career in finance, and later lived at The Luxembourg House in New York City, a residence closely associated with his professional and public life.
Today, JV Forrestal Elementary School proudly reflects both its historic foundations and its forward-looking mission; educating students in a community shaped by tradition, service, and a shared sense of belonging.
